Background of the Study
Chemotherapy administration is a critical component of cancer treatment, requiring strict adherence to established safety protocols to ensure patient safety and treatment efficacy. Oncology nurses play a pivotal role in this process, as they are responsible for preparing and administering chemotherapeutic agents, monitoring patients for adverse reactions, and providing education on managing side effects. Compliance with chemotherapy administration guidelines, such as those established by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), is essential to minimize the risk of medication errors and occupational exposure to hazardous drugs.
In Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi State, there is limited research on the extent to which oncology nurses adhere to these guidelines. Factors such as inadequate training, lack of resources, and insufficient institutional support may contribute to non-compliance, potentially compromising patient safety and treatment outcomes. Understanding the current level of compliance and identifying barriers to adherence are crucial steps toward improving oncology nursing practices in the region.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical importance of adhering to chemotherapy administration guidelines, anecdotal evidence suggests that oncology nurses in Kebbi State may face challenges that hinder compliance. These challenges could include limited access to up-to-date guidelines, inadequate training programs, and a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE). Non-compliance with established protocols can lead to serious consequences, including medication errors, increased risk of adverse patient outcomes, and heightened occupational exposure risks for healthcare providers. This study aims to evaluate the current level of compliance among oncology nurses in Kebbi State and identify factors contributing to non-compliance.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of compliance with chemotherapy administration guidelines among oncology nurses in Kebbi State.
2. To identify barriers that hinder adherence to these guidelines.
3. To evaluate the impact of compliance on patient safety and treatment outcomes.
4. To propose strategies to enhance adherence to chemotherapy administration guidelines among oncology nurses.
Research Questions
1. What is the current level of compliance with chemotherapy administration guidelines among oncology nurses in Kebbi State?
2. What barriers do oncology nurses face in adhering to these guidelines?
3. How does compliance with chemotherapy administration guidelines affect patient safety and treatment outcomes?
4. What strategies can be implemented to improve adherence to these guidelines among oncology nurses?
Research Hypotheses
1. Oncology nurses in Kebbi State exhibit varying levels of compliance with chemotherapy administration guidelines.
2. Multiple barriers, including inadequate training and lack of resources, hinder adherence to these guidelines.
3. Higher compliance with chemotherapy administration guidelines is associated with improved patient safety and treatment outcomes.
4. Implementing targeted interventions can enhance adherence to chemotherapy administration guidelines among oncology nurses.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on oncology nurses working in public and private healthcare facilities in Kebbi State that provide chemotherapy services. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires, interviews, and direct observations to assess compliance levels and identify barriers to adherence. Limitations of the study may include self-reporting biases, limited generalizability beyond the study area, and potential challenges in accessing certain healthcare facilities due to logistical constraints.
